Cheyenne River Lakota


Berwyn Rooks was born in South Dakota and is an enrolled member of the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation. His father is Oglala from the Pine Ridge reservation and his mother is from Cheyenne River. The techniques that Berwyn Rooks uses in handcrafting his moccasins and lodge drums have been passed down in his family for generations. All of his work is done with completely natural materials that he prepares in age-old ways. Berwyn Rooks lives in North Georgia near Chattanooga, TN.


Native American Moccasins
These beautiful Native American moccasins are made of high quality, very soft deer hide. They are completely hand sewn and beaded with glass seed beads. The design, a medicine wheel, symbolizes the circle of life and the four directions. Custom designs and hide colors can be requested for your moccasins. Please specify size or trace the outline of your foot and send it to us.

Lodge Drum

These handmade lodge drums are double-headed and are designed to produce clear sound for ceremonial use. This traditional type of drum hs been used by the Lakota since the beginning of time in their inipi and sweat lodge ceremonies. The heads are made of hand-worked rawhide which is stretched on a frame of red cedar and hand-laced with rawhide strips. The drum stick is made with deer hide and river cane, the indigenous bamboo of the Southeast US. There are no nails used anywhere on the drum or stick.
